UN: near 19,000 civilians killed in Iraq

NEW YORK, Jan. 20 (MNA) – Between January 2014 and October 2015, at least 18,802 civilians were killed and another 36,245 were injured in the Iraq's ongoing conflict, the

United Nations reported.According to a report released by the UN Assistance Mission for Iraq and the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights, clashes and the actions of terrorist groups in that period also left more than 3.2 millions displaced, a third of them school-age children.

The report is based largely on information from victims, survivors and witnesses of violations of international humanitarian law.

Iraq is experiencing a stage of instability and violence since 2003, when it was invaded and occupied by the US and its allies, a situation which is largely attributed to the rise of violent extremism in the region.

Terrorist groups like the ISIL, which controls territory and imposes its radical vision of Sharia (Islamic law) in order to establish a caliphate in the Middle East and the North Africa are causing a particular impact on the Iraqi civilian population
